Summary:Important issues were discussed recently on the promotion of underutilised indigenous fruit trees (UIFT) as these species can contribute substantially to the livelihood of local people because of their multipurpose uses and demand in local and national markets. This paper gives an overview of the current research and development work by the international centers on UIFT in Asia and highlights the constraints to commercialization, potential marker value of these species and potential strategies for their development.
