Politics, ideology and education in the PSOE during the Transición (1976-1982): Schooling and secularization

Firstly, we expose the educational policy of the tardofranquismo and the alternative proposals of the Spanish Left, identifying those aspects of the dialogue between ideas. We pay special attention to the idea of participation and the concept of Escuela Pública in terms of secularization. Secondly, we analyze how those ideas were passed on to the PSOE and how their internal debates on schooling and secularization were developed through various milestones up to the Constitution of 1978. We analyze the conceptions of what is possible and desirable for the most prominent socialist figures, such as Felipe González, José María Maravall and Luis Gómez Llorente. Finally, we study how the Constitution of 1978 – and the subsequent ruling of the Constitutional Court, which would give form to the Constitutional Bloc – resolved the internal debate of the PSOE, declaring the participationist proposals of Gómez Llorente as impossible and leaving the definitive path to the educational theses of Maravall and Felipe González.
