Summary: |
Another effect, now re-emerging, is the ’sleeper effect’. The sleeper effect was first discovered back in the late ‘60s. Messages from low credibility sources (such as a politician) usually have limited impact because of the source’s low credibility. But studies show that this can grow over time and can have a delayed effect. The reason is that as time passes by, our minds begin to disassociate the information from its source. It’s not that we can’t remember where the information came from. But the two things (the information and the source) are not kept together in our minds. So any feeling of ’contamination’ associated with the information lessens over time.
|
