ΑΙΔΩΣ Δ’ ΟΥΚ ΑΓΑΘΗ: <i>Works and Days</i> 317-319

In Hesiod’s αἰδὼς δ’ οὐκ ἀγαθή (<em>Erga</em> 317), αἰδώς is not a divided concept referring here to the poor man’s shame, but is litotes for its opposite, ἀναιδείη, which offers to the indolent an easy but short-lived prosperity.<br />
