Summary: | 碩士 === 國立中正大學 === 心理學研究所 === 90 === Syntax is an important base for language acquisition of children for it narrows the search space for the meaning (Gleitman & Gillette,1999). The purpose of the study was to investigate the nature of verb and how it influenced children’s acquisition of verb. Three experiments were conducted by following the preferential looking paradigm.
The experiment 1 consisted of 63 children, 16-20 months of age. It was examined whether Mandarin-speaking children could use word order (S-V-O) to justify pro-drop sentence meaning? The experiment 2 consisted of 39children, 16-30 months of age. The experiment examined whether Mandarin-speaking children could distinct between transitive and intransitive verbs and use the syntactic structure to understand unfamiliar verb. The experiment 3 consisted of 56children, 20-30 months of age. The experiment examined whether children could use the syntactic structure to understand non-sense verb. The conclusions reveal 16-20 months of age could understand word order both with sentence subjects or pro-drop sentence subjects. The experiment 2 and 3 reveal children could use the syntactic structure to understand unfamiliar and non-sense verb meanings. This experiment supports Mandarin-speaking children could also use syntactic structure to learn new verb.
