The subject are the 191 students of the fifth and sixth grades, all in Chiayi City. Every student was required to finish two paper-pencil tests: one is alternative conceptions, the other is problem-solving during a week. After the paper-pencil tests. 18 students who were selected from the sample selected were representatives for depth interview to analyze and compare students’ alternative conceptions and problem-solving paper-pencil tests. The major results of this study are as following: ⒈Students’ alternative conceptions come from the experience of life, the words of daily use, the ideas of students themselves, lack of connected knowledge ,usage of wrong analogies, the feature of one object. ⒉Students use experience of life to solve the problem, not use prior knowledge. So if Students have alternative conceptions, they still could solve the problem successfully. ⒊Students can combine another related subject knowledge to solve the problem. If they can’t find one related subject, they will use similar one. ⒋Students can use prior knowledge to solve the problem, they will not be successful to solve the problem if they have alternative conceptions.
