The subjects, 6th-grade students of the elementary school, watched English cartoons with the same content. Among them, some watched the film with English subtitles, while some watched with both English and Chinese subtitles. The researchers firstly chose 68 students from Ren Der Elementary School, Tainan County, as subjects. They were all 6th graders from Class C and Class D. These students were grouped into Team A and Team B based on the scores obtained from pre-test, for the similar listening level falling into the same team. Then, two teams of students spent more than 10 minutes watching part of the film everyday. The first film was “Snow White”. For Team A, the film was English subtitles, while Team B watched the film with English and Chinese subtitles. The film-watching activity lasted for around one and a half months, and they all watched the film twice in total. After that, they watched the other English cartoon called “Bambi” under the same condition and arrangement. After finishing watching the film, 68 students took the test of listening comprehension, filled out questionnaires, had individual interviews, and so on, for the purpose of this research. The findings of this research could be concluded as follows: 1. After the students watched “Snow White” and “Bambi” and then took listening comprehension test, we found that the higher scores were obtained by Team B. That is to say, with English and Chinese subtitles in the same film, the film benefited students more in their listening competence than the film with only English subtitle. 2. There is no significant progress when Team A watched “Bambi” immediately after they finished watching “Snow White”. The same situation applies to Team B. 3. The results of the questionnaire show that these elementary school students prefer learning English by watching English cartoons. 4. The results obtained from interviews also show that while watching English cartoons, subjects show more interest in the films with both English and Chinese subtitles than the film with only English subtitle.
