The single subject research across settings with multiple probe design was used. The independent variable was functional communication training and the dependent variable was the frequency of spontaneous communication, communication response with prompts, and problem behavior. Data were collected in the school, family, and community during the baseline, intervention, and maintenance phases. Visual analysis was used to analyze the data. The social validity analysis was also supplemented. Results of the study were summarized as followings: 1. The functional communication training was effective on the spontaneous communication for the elementary school child with severe mental retardation in phases of acquisition and maintenance. 2. The functional communication training was effective on the communication response with prompts for the elementary school child with severe mental retardation in phases of acquisition and maintenance. 3. The functional communication training was effective on the decrease of problem behavior for the elementary school child with severe mental retardation in phases of acquisition and maintenance. 4. Interviews with related individuals have indicated that this research have a high social validity. Mai-Feng Tsuang 莊妙芬 2006 學位論文 ; thesis 181 zh-TW
