Abstract This study uses Quasi-experimental Designs approach to primarily conduct quantitative analysis, with qualitative analysis as the second, and to investigate the effects of using video film in the instruction on “Aquatic Family” to the 4th grader. There are three objectives of this study. The first is to investigate the effects on the students’ learning achievement with the aid of video film into the instruction on “Aquatic Family” topic. The second is to further investigate the effects on the students’ attitude toward ecological environment protection and conservation. The third is to further investigate the effects on the students’ behavior toward ecological environment protection and conservation. The fourth is to understand students’ point of view toward this kind of video instruction. The subjects of this study are 2 classes of 4th grade students from one of the elementary schools located in Taipei County. The experimental group will receive instruction with the aid of video film. The controlled group will be provided with conventional instruction. Both groups will be given a pretest and a posttest respectively prior and after the instruction. The pretest will serve as the co-variable , the video instruction as the independent variable, and the posttest as the dependent variable. The three variables will be used to undertake an analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) in order to compare whether the scores of the two groups reach significant difference. During instruction, teachers will collect, from the experimental group, the learning sheets and questionnaires that students completed in class and the interview records. Those data will be analyzed to understand the effects on students’ “Aquatic Family Learning Achievement”, “Attitude and Behavior toward Ecological Environment Protection and Conservation”, as well as students’ point of view toward this kind of video instruction. Results show that students who received the instruction with video aids, in relative to the controlled group: 1. Score higher on the “Aquatic Family Learning Achievement”. The difference is significant, reaching F=6.772 and P< .05. 2. Score higher both on the “Attitude toward Ecological Environment Protection and Conservation” and “Behavior toward Ecological Environment Protection and Conservation” and reach significant difference, with the former reaching F=10.263 and P< .05 and the latter F=4.47 and P< .05. 3. Hold positive point of view toward this kind of video instruction and look forward to it in the future. According to this study, video instruction on “Aquatic Family” topic has a positive learning effect on students’ learning achievement as well as their attitude and behavior toward ecological environment protection and conservation. Furthermore, it enhances students’ interest and desire of learning and their ability to explore things. Therefore, teachers should develop their professional knowledge and skills and make good use of teaching aids to better educate the students on ecological environment issues. For future study, it is recommended that the experimental subjects increase, to include expansion of school facilities and equipments and teacher’s co-teaching group that works on curriculum integration and coherence, in order to conduct Solomon Four-Group Design analysis. Abstract
This study uses Quasi-experimental Designs approach to primarily conduct quantitative analysis, with qualitative analysis as the second, and to investigate the effects of using video film in the instruction on “Aquatic Family” to the 4th grader.
Results show that students who received the instruction with video aids, in relative to the controlled group:
