In the present research, participants were supraliminally or subliminally presented with irregular geometric figures. Each participant rated the liking for and the recognition of old and new stimuli and reported their affective states. To explore possible boundary conditions of the diffuse effect, social stimuli (photographs of women and men) were included as test stimuli. Results revealed specific and generalized effects of mere exposure, but no diffuse effects. In addition, the relationship between liking ratings and recognition responses was used to test mediating mechanisms of mere exposure effect. Results indicated that liking ratings for remembered stimuli were higher than those for stimuli that were merely known, and liking ratings for judged old and truly old stimuli were higher than those for judged new and truly new stimuli. These results provide evidence for the uncertainty reduction model, but are inconsistent with the perceptual fluency misattribution model of mere exposure effect.
