The result of this study could provide some suggestions for mathematics teachers to improve the approaches on assessment. The study applied action research method, which lasted for three and half months. The subjects were 35 ninth grade students, with 18 boys and 17 girls from the researcher’s class. The collection and analysis was mainly based on the quantitative data and supported by qualitative data. The research instruments included mathematical self-efficacy scale, mathematical achievement tests, mathematical journals, teacher’s journals, and semi-structured interview sheet. This study applied SPSS10.0 to analyze about descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation coefficients and repeated measures. The result of this study showed that during the process of portfolio assessment, some situation, like unfair grading, time limit and not enough accomplishment happened. The researcher tried ways to solve all those problems. The results showed that the portfolio assessment actually improved students’ self-efficacy , but the learning achievement didn’t improve significantly.
