Based on the classroom observation of art teaching and the conclusions from literature reviews, the researcher found that there’s a big gap of art education. Considering the mental and physical development of pre-school kids, the researcher, who believed art education is not merely art skills, designed a four-month action research. The objects of this action research were kids aged from 4 to 6 in public kindergartens. The purpose of this action research was to understand the process and effects of teaching art appreciation in kindergarten and to document the reflection and growth for both kids and teachers. Classroom observation records and documents were analyzed to obtain the following conclusions: (A) For curriculum design, the researcher blended the art appreciation ideas into their learning units to develop art education for pre-school kids. Picture books appreciation, art experience activities and art creation were also adopted for art education. (B) The process and the effect: pre-school kids were more interested in learning art appreciation through picture books. By experiencing art, pre-school kids learned to explore the sensory experiences in their environment. They also learned to show their feelings and thoughts through art creation. (C) Pre-school kids learned to know art and were inspired by art. They learned to think, to appreciate and to create with art. The teachers were more enthusiastic to teach with art and were inspired by art. The suggestions based on the results of this action research were provided for kindergarten teachers and the potential researchers
