It is written from the first person perspective and describes my teaching stories in the past 25 years by using narrative inquiry. From my life stories, I studied the origin and background of marine consciousness that influences my teaching methods and life, and discussed how the dedication to marine education affected my teaching career. The research is divided into five sections. Firstly, I narrated my journey from land to sea. The ocean has broadened my perspective and also entailed challenges, which awakened a curriculum consciousness deep in my mind. The ocean helps me to recognize the importance of marine education. Furthermore, I discussed the intimate but unbalanced relation between Taiwan and the ocean; the people of this island need marine education which tightly links the Taiwanese populace and the ocean. Secondly, I reviewed my teaching career which lasted for 25 years. I raised questions about the related issues occurring on this island; we should consider the ecological problems and transform public affairs in terms of the ocean. While sailing, I understand more about the ocean and take it as a source for fulfilling civic education. Moreover, based on two activities of marine education which I promoted, I explained my reflections and recognized the influences on my teaching career. Finally, I noticed that the process of fulfilling civic/marine education requires “discovering problems, understanding the issues, thinking, being inspired, building up our own ideas, taking action, experiencing and taking actions again”, which reflects my curriculum consciousness, and identifies my status as citizen and teacher. As a result, I realize where I belong and have found my inner power. Dedication to marine education is what I have chosen as my path in life, and I believe that the inner strength I discovered will accompany me throughout my entire life.
