This study aimed to explore the learning preferences of college students in discussion groups. Participants were 51 college students majoring in Applied English at a university of technology in central Taiwan. These students also participated in the same course in English teaching theory and practice and were assigned a topic to discuss through mobile devices and face-to-face discussions after class. A questionnaire encompassing content validity and reliability was used to investigate the participants’ perceptions of group discussion through mobile devices and face-to-face discussions. The duration of the research was only one academic semester. The findings showed that online group discussion can significantly increase students’ motivation while decreasing their anxiety, with little improvement in students’ performance.
