The study design was quasi-experimental design, and a total of 195 eighth grade students in public schools from Changhua City participated. Participants were assigned to three groups: anonymous competition game-based learning group, no anonymous competition game-based learning group, and control group. At the completion of the study, students completed learning performance test and questionnaires. The results of this study found that students in anonymous competition and no anonymous competition game-based learning groups significantly performed better on the learning performance than the control group. In regards to the aspects of learning goals, performance goals, and perceived ability, the result indicated that anonymous competition game-based learning group performed significantly better on three items than the control group. And no anonymous competition game-based learning group performed better than the control group. Furthermore, high need for cognition students performed better on the learning performance, learning goals, achievement goals, and perceived ability of science learning than low need for cognition students.
