Learners of the experimental group were divided into small groups with mixed levels, and worked cooperatively to complete the tasks assigned by the teacher. The participants in the study were 56 seventh graders in Junior High School in HsinChu City. They were selected from two classes with similar English initial proficiency, and the two classes were randomly divided into the experimental group (n=28) using cooperative learing and the control group (n=28) using conventional teacher-led instruction respectively. The experiment lasted for 6 weeks, 900 minutes. The results indicated that there was no significant effect of cooperative learning on the Junior High School students’ English learning achievements. However, from the questionnaires and interview, the students preferred cooperative learning. Most students had positive attiutdes toward cooperative learning. Based on the findings, some suggestions were provided for those who are interested in lessons incorporating cooperative learning and future studies related to lessons using cooperative learning.
