Description
Summary:碩士 === 國立雲林科技大學 === 設計學研究所 === 107 === In recent years, Taiwanese government has been promoting ‘New Southbound Policy’, expanding the target markets to South-East Asia. Therefore, it is crucial for Taiwan’s industries to stand out in the competitive global environment. Not only do the industries need unique characteristics and advantages, the policies also play an important role. This research focuses on textile industry, one of Taiwan’s traditional industries. By studying the successful textile industry in Jiangnan Region during Ming Dynasty, the study hopes to explore the uniqueness and competitive strengths in Taiwan’s textile industry as a reference for future development. The economy of Ming Dynasty prospered mostly because of its handicraft industries and commercial market activities. These activities helped Ming Dynasty gained significant foreign exchanges, providing the handicraft industry with both artistic and commercial values. Textile is one of the most prosperous handicraft industries, with textile products being the most important item in China’s international trades. Since cotton was introduced to China, it had been commonly used to contain warmth in garments. The Chinese government also acquired horses from the minority groups by exchanging cotton with them. Despite of the prosperity of cotton trading and its influence on linen and silk trading in most regions of China, the Jiangnan Region was barely affected. The silk industry in this area continued to prosper as they developed various patterns and styles; exporting silk products to the rest of the world with Ming Dynasty’s advanced shipping technology. Therefore, this study first applied Michael Porter Diamond Model, historical records, and the sixth ‘W’s in document analysis to categorize each element in Jiangnan’s textile industry. The study then analyzed and compared the six elements in Diamond Model: factors of production, requirements, related and support industries, business strategies and competitions, government policy, and opportunities, concluding that Jiangnan’s silk industry had acquired trading advantages in the perspective of geography, skills, and cost.
