Consistent findings from three randomised controlled trials in sub-Saharan Africa reflect a protective effect of male circumcision on HIV infection. Given the attention bestowed on the topic by popular media and the international HIV / AIDS community alike, it is justifiable for countries with high HIV prevalence to consider adopting a policy for male circumcision in HIV prevention. However, male circumcision involves many human rights challenges and therefore it is justifiable to consider the human rights issues at stake during policy development. |
